I would be applying for permanent disability, and I'm wondering if I would still be responsible for paying child support out of my monthly SSI amount or if that would be paid directly to my ex-wife above and beyond anything paid to me.

Yes, you are still responsible for payments. But will come out of your SS supplemental income and they will be sent to your children via the guardian (ex spouse, grandparents, etc) who is their immediate caretaker. The amount will be determined by the courts and/or child support offices. But your disability checks will stay the same.

If this new situation means that you are incapable of earning the income upon which your child support obligation was based, you would be due for a reduction. You can file a petition to have child support reduced, based on your new income. You will still have to pay some money, of course, and it may come out of your check and go right to support collections, but at least it will be the fair amount.

your child will receive a check from ssi for the maximum amount. It might be more than your regular child support. If it is less than the amount you pay now, then you should petition the courts for a decrease so that the only amount paid is what is paid by SSI.
