i believe i may have fathered a son twenty years ago... it was a brief relationship and she would never tell me if he was my child.. have resently found the mother again and would like to know the answer one way or the other.. i would like to know what legal obigations in the state of maine that may come with this after twenty years... i'm aware that it may not be in his best interest for me to come into his life, but would like peace of mind knowing for sure or should i just let "sleeping dogs lye"

Tough one, and I can't help you with the legal stuff. I've heard of fathers being sued retroactively for child support, but I have no idea if that would apply in your case, or even if it's true.

If the dates are such that you truly have a good shot at being the kid's father, he's over 18, I would consider going right to him. Just tell him what you know, that you had relations with his mom on such-and-such a date, you do the math, would you like to know? You and he could get a DNA test if he agrees. If he doesn't want to and gets mad, the only thing you're guilty of is telling him that you had relations with his mom on such and such a date. That's not a crime, that's a fact. Some would want to know, some wouldn't, you have no way of knowing which he is, and neither, for that matter, does his mother.
