let x =no. of adults
23-x =no. of children
so,
332= 15x + 14(23-x)
332= 15x + 322 - 14x
332= x + 322
332-322= x
10=x
23-x=23-10
23-10=13

13 children attended the play

you may check by:

13x14 + 15x10
182 + 150
$332

if all adults ... $15 *23 = $345

That $345 - Collected Amount $332 = $13 difference

since children tickets cost $1 less than adults...

13 children

13 children - 23 total people = 10 adults...

to check

10 adults @ $15 = $150
13 kids @ $14 = $182

$150 +$ 182 = $332 total collected

What a ripoff for kid tickets! Let X be the adult and then 23-X must be the kids (it's amazing how many people can't figure this out). Moving along, the total proceeds are sum of each group x price of ticket for a person in that group.
So 15 X + 14 (23-X) = 332
Solve for X, 23-X is the number of kids.

let x be the number of children
then, since there are totally 23 people, so the number of adult is 23-x

money collected from adult is $15(23-x)
money collected from children is $14x

total money collected = 15(23-x) + 14x = 332
345 -15x +14x = 332
- x = 332 -345 .............. (subtract both sides by 345)
- x = -13
x = 13

13 children attended the play.

let number of adults attending play= a
let number of children attending play=c

15a+14c=332 (1)
(theater collected $15 from each adult attending and $14 from each child attending)
a+c=23 (2)
(adults and children combined are 23 people)

therefore
a=23-c (3)

sub (3) into (1)

15(23-c)+14c=332
345-15c+14c=332 (expand LHS)
14c-15c=332-345 (take 345 from both sides)
-1c=-13 (simplify)
c=13 (multiply both sides by -1)

there were 13 children at the play

there were also 10 adults
