Chickens (Hens or Pullets) lay eggs whether there is a male (Rooster or C ock) present or not. Chickens nomally lay eggs about every 26 or so hours.

The rooster mates the hen by climbing on her back and injecting semen from his cloaca into her cloaca. He has no penis.

The sperm must travel up the female's reproductive tract to the infindubulum (the uppper most part of the tract). When a yolk is ovualted from the hen's ovary, it falls into the infindibulum and that is where fertilization takes place.

May people think that the whole yolk is the chick, but actually most of the yolk is food for the chick that will form. There is a whitish dot on one side of the yolk, called the germinal disk, that is ACTUALLY where the sperm would enter and the chick would form.

After fertilization, the thick albumen (egg white), the shell membranes, the thin albumen, and then the shell are added to complete the egg, in that order.

Hens sit on their eggs to keep them warm. The warmth helps the embryos(specks)turn into chicks.

A hen lays an egg almost every day, even if she does not mate with a cockerel. The eggs we eat do not have a chick embryo inside.

Hens mate by coming into contact with cockerels. They need to mate to make chicks. Fertilized eggs may not be sold for eating.

Males and females both have slits. Birds don't have penises. They mate by lining up the slits. The female croches down. The male climbs on top of here, fluttering his wings to stay in position. She moves her tail to one side, and he lines up ther slit and passes sperm into the female. Inside the female, the sperm fertalize an ovum, which is an unwrapped egg. The female then secretes the calcium around the egg to form the shell.
