there may be some confusion over your question.
If you have a 2 cycle gas engine, and have to mix oil with the gas, then you need to use 2 cycle oil.
If you are talking about a 4 cycle engine, The use what the manufacturer recommends. It will usually be marked somewhere on the engine near the oil fill knob. 30 weight is normal but check it out.

I have always used Rotella 15W-40 oil in mine because this oil is meant for both diesel and gas engines and since I am in the automotive business I know that this oil will last and survive anything, it has not let me down for over 20 years.

Slightly heavier than diesel; lawn mower engines get much hotter than gas or diesel engines.

i wouldn`t use a diesel oil in a lawnmower wrong additives if you lawnmower has a oil filter use a regular oil as your car with out a oil filter use a non detergant oil

SAE 30. It's air cooled and 30 will hold it's viscosity under the extreme heat.

best option is regular gas, but mix it with some small motor conditioner, reduces rattling and excessive smoke...........
