The Erie Canal (currently part of the New York State Canal System) is a canal in New York State, United States, that runs from the Hudson River to Lake Erie, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean.

Nowadays, it doesn't go through much. It has been replaced by the New York State Barge Canal. The canal met the Hudson near Gloversville and followed a course next to the Mohawk River, which flowed east to west. When the Mohawk River source was reached, they continued to move to the west, taking advantage of any lakes or rivers on the way for a water source, since water has to flow downhill to Buffalo on Lake Erie.
