How do you calculate the number of possible outcomes for puzzles given the critieria that numbers 1-9 fit vertically, horizontally, and within each of the nine boxes without repeating a number within a line or box?

Start in the upper left hand box. In that one box, you can have 9 * 8 * 7 * 6 * 5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 or 362880 combinations of numbers.

From there it gets complicated, so I will defer to the experts. In 2005, Felgenhauer and Jarvis calculated that there are 6,670,903,752,021,072,936,960 possible 3x3 Sudoku layouts.

i think it is 9 * 9!

9! = 9*8*7*6*5*4*3*2*1
