connected to a extension cord. The light socket is getting hot, not to the point of melting or anything like that, but it's def. hot. The bulb is 60 watts. Is it safe to leave on all night? I'm not worried about the snake getting to hot, I'm worried about the thing malfunctioning and starting a fire. I guess my question really is, is there anything special they do to heat lamp set ups?

try finding a lower wattage bulb but you can try leaving it on overnight.

If your light puts out enough energy, it will melt a plastic socket, so you need to use one designed for the heat- sometimes called a ceramic or porcelain socket.

If the typical plastic socket gets warm enough, it will soften up and electrical cords can touch, starting a fire.

You may also want to rethink the 'blacklight heat bulb'- they are not always the safest things to use- not only hot, but they emit rays that are not real helpful.
