I haven't cleaned in a while and my room smells...well...funky. I don't want to just spray something so what should I do? I have the time and energy to move all my furniture, I already picked up all the dirty clothes and stuff. I have carpet that's stained(orange carpet with some old pet stains and a few spills), lots of dust, and windows that don't open. I'm no stranger to cleaning but this is sort of daunting. How do I clean metal furniture? How do I clean and make the woodwork/wooden furniture shine? What's the best way to clean a rust/hard water stained toilet? How should I get ashes out of my keyboard so it doesn't stick? How do I get thick dust off books? What should I use to get random gunk off a chair? It's that time of year and I'd really like to get this done and have a room I can be proud of.

Start cleaning from top to the bottom.
If you have a ceiling fixture, clean it.

First gather all your cleaning supplies together and tackle the room one layer at a time. First the floor, walls and windows. If you can, get rid of the carpet, if not, a shampooing will help. Treat the stains first with something like "hot spot" and then use a canned cleaner if you can't rent/buy a steam cleaner. Either way you clean the carpet, use it to clean your upholstery as well. BEFORE the shampooing, do a thorough vacuuming! Clean the walls and windows with a vinegar and water mixture, which should also work well for the metal furniture. This should also be safe to wipe the woodwork down. Then finish the wood will a bit of polish/lemon oil. Use a canned air spray to get the ash out of the key board and the dust off of the books. Random gunk? a knife, hot water soaking, and a Mr. Clean Eraser. Good luck!

whoa, whoa, whoa, 1 thing at a time here! first off, u should move everything out of the room, then try getting a steam cleaner and steam clean the rug so that the stains get out. once that's done, start cleaning off the furniture, 4 the wooden objects, don't wash w/ water, spray that anti wood stuff. metal furniture, wash w/ hot water and soap. large amounts of dust can b cleaned off w/ either a duster or a swiffer brush (swiffers dont spread dust around - better results 4 allergines.) r those windows rusting? if they r, that's probably y u can't get them open, if u have 2, u may want 2 replace those windows w/ new 1s - it's worth the change! computer keyboards r easy, turn the keyboard upside down and start wiping the cracks w/ a duster somewhere outside so the dust from the keyboard doesnt dirty the rest of ur house. stained tiolets, hmmm....im not sure, bur try cleaning it w/ tiolet bowl cleaner, it's not just 4 the inside of the bowl, but 4 the outside 2. and finally, 4 the junky chair, just place the items in the places where they're supposed 2 b, boxes, shelves, etc. once ur done, u may return all furniture in the order u want and enjoy.

Rust Removal from Sinks, Tubs, Toilets and Tile
Cleaning a bathroom shouldn't be a daunting task. The appearance of rust on sinks, tubs and bathroom tiles can be enough to put off even the most creative housekeeper. Cleaning bathroom rust isn't difficult however. It can accomplished with several items found in the kitchen. Lemon juice left to sit on the offending spot for at least 30 minutes should be enough to remove the rust. White vinegar works much in the same manner. It may take a couple of applications, but either of these household staples should be enough. If they're not, you may want to try something a little stronger such as ordinary household bleach or a cleaning product contain oxalic acid. Clean windows and mirrors with Windex and paper towel, Get an old tee shirt and spray it with furniture polish and use in on all the wood in the room. Take a spray bottle and put 1 cup of white vinegar 2 cups of warm water and 1 teaspoon of dish detergent, get a sponge and use this solution and spray the stains on the carpet and sponge it in, use paper towel to sop up the wetness, and repeat if necessary. The vinegar is an odor eater, and will help the odors in the room. Metal I would have to know what kind of metal. Try logging on to
www.e-how.com they have all the answers. You might find somethink about the keyboard keys also. I'm tired and I'm not even doing the work. Make sure you stop during this cleaning frenzy, and reward yourself with a Gatorade or something, you will need to regain your strength. But the outcome will be worth it.

Be sure you have eaten a while before this.....

Today I popped each and every key, a few at a time, out of my "eggshell Ivory" keyboard out (WHY do they make them that colour???) and cleaned them off with a papertowel soaked in Windex. (Bear in mind I'm a smoker, so even the grime that a NON-smoker would eventually get is multiplied by that "lovely" pale tan colour, if you spend a year or two on it, like I do).

But underneath! Around the little square slots they fit into? - Yeesh! I used Windex-soaked Q-tips for that.....

Toast crumbs, bits of tobbaco, cat hairs (she sits on my lap sometimes), even the odd little hair of MINE, or an eyelash! Even one or two of the TEENY little "no-see-um" bugs that I remember sweeping away from the Monitor on last summers warm evenings, (do you get those ones that can even get through the screen, they are so darn tiny?).

think dust off books and any thing else? SWIFFER products, use a dust cloth designed to go on a swiffer sweeper and just wipe books, plan on using more then one., they get used up fast on heavy dist but are well worth the money

IFor getting rid of odors - found the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT carbon odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. It works so much better than all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. and gels and oils that say keep away from fabric, etc. and just don't eliminate odors. Just place a few around problem areas. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying

I would start by taking on a little area at a time and just start wiping it with a rag and possibly some 409 or other cleaner and a vacuum. You might have mold growing somewhere to cause the smell.
