i mean, when you listen to them on Cds or your ipod, they sound great. but some of them sound so weird when you listen to them live. take a look at fergie and gwen stefani for example. they're both great artists and i love them both, but i was disappointed when i heard them live because their voices sounded weird and shaky. i'm not saying that all of them sound bad, but there are just certain artists. so, what do you think?

I hear ya, its quite a common fact.
I love Whitney, I think she has a great voice but I hate her live performances.

People like Gwen Stefani and Fergie are more performers than real musicians. I know all about music stuff and I know that there are nice machines in the studio that can make even a bad singer sound great on an album, but it is hard to repeat live. People in the 70's and 80's for example did not have this,so if you hear a good singer back then, it means that they are really good. However this does not mean that no one can sing nowadays. People like Kelly Clarkson,Alicia Keys,Carrie Underwood, and Josh Groban can REALLY sing. So what I usually do is hear them live, then I know.

since gwen stefani and fergie dance/move around a lot on stage, maybe that's why their voices seemed "weird and shaky". i know, from the concerts i've been to, that they have great voices (i usually attend rock concerts where they don't dance) and sound almost exactly the same live as they do on their cds.

but i'm somewhat skeptical about actors/actresses who get into a music career because they just seem to do it just for the hell of it. for example paris hilton.

Most singers are good, but need lots of instruments or synths to drown out the bad parts of their voice. It seems like anyone can get a record deal, so that's why I want one.

Although, some people can get nervous on stage, and out of breath from performing.

I do agree! I think most singers these days are computer generated.
