I like Bill Bryson's A Brief History of Everything. Also, there is a great book called Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Tyson was just named President of the Planetary Society. He's the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York, and helped oversee its renovation, so he knows how to teach to the public. I've heard him lecture, and he has a real enthusiasm that shows in his books.
