I have often wondered that myself... the only thing I can think of is the sounds of the song are very soft and soothing... and babies don't know what you are saying...

I never sang that song to either of my kids because it bothered me. I used to sing commercial jingles to put my oldest to sleep and my youngest just liked the rocking...no sound.

well the brothers GRIM wrote lullabies and children stories to scared kids into being good or going to sleep
but the songs do have the pretty sounds and such so who really knows it seams to work and why fisx someting thats not broke

Why do we sing "ring around the rosies" when it's about tuberculosis? (I think it's tuberculosis; it might be polio.) Why do we sing "Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home." (Your house is on fire and your children will burn.) Scary thoughts. What nut wrote this stuff, huh?

good question isn't that the one that talks about the baby falling? i have never sang this to any of my kids. I always thought it was stupid
