My sister had 3 goldfish and 1 of them kept floating at the top on its side it would occassionaly swim to the bottom of the tank for food but really struggled doing this, someone said it had a bloat problem but........ my sis moved house and we got the fish we gave them fresh water etc and the fish hasn't done it since...
Any ideas why it would correct itself like that?

Rather than bloat, it sounds like this might have been a swim bladder problem. This can be caused by feeding improper foods, or a bacterial infection from poor water quality.

You've mentioned new water, perhaps you are using a different food as well?

Sounds like swim bladder caused by constipation. You're probably feeding the fish better. If it's a fancy goldfish, it's recommended you thaw a few frozen peas and pop them out of their skins into the tank. The fish love them and they prevent swim bladder disorders from constipation.

He may have swimbladder problem. It happens by overfeeding. The fish gets constipated and bloated. He will bob up and down and continue to go to the surface for oxygen. The solution to this problem is to not feed the fish for 1-2 days and let the fish do his business so he's not constipated anymore.
