Adventure: Seven Samurai (1954) directed by Kurosawa, Japanese. The best men's movie ever. The great Toshiro Mifune puts on another performance as a beast of a man. The best depiction of men acting effectively and honorably as a team.
Film Noir: Rififi (1955, dir Jules Dassin, French) Tony le Stephanois, honorable among thieves, decides to try one last big-time heist and retire. The 32-minute heist scene is legendary: no music, no dialogue: the nod of a head, the flick of a hand, just a look says everything. The men's teamwork and ingenuity with household, low-tech items is delightful. Complete with a nightclub song and dance by a sexy chanteuse.
Comedy: Tampopo (1985) Japanese, with Ken Watanabe. Billed as a Japanese noodle Western, it's about competing kitchens trying to produce the best noodles. Whacky and delightful.
Friendship, Drama, Romance: Fairwell, My Concubine (1993) China/Hong Kong (Mandarin) Two boys who meet as apprentices in the Chinese Opera in the 1920s remain friends and loyal to their art for 50 years, through wars and dramatic national upheaval. A fine epic.
Romance, "movie" movie: Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (new version, 170 minutes, 2002, Italian) A wise-guy of a little boy becomes as passionate about movies as the projectionist he befriends. If you like finding, losing and finding love, enjoy!
Drama: Der Blaue Engel (The Blue Angel, 1930, Marlene Dietrich and Emil Jannings, German) This is the film that put Dietrich on the map as one of the great femmes fatales. Her treacherous stage girl, Lola Lola, lures and seduces an upstanding professor with tragic effect.
Documentary: Shoah (1985, France, in 6 languages) Many survivors of the Nazi Holocaust tell their gripping stories in disturbing detail. 9 1/2 hours of film without using any archival footage. When I saw this in a theater in 2 long sittings, people cried while strangers and family held them tenderly. "If you could lick my heart, it would poison you," says one survivor of the Warsaw ghetto. Produced so future generations will understand.

I thought I had the perfect answer until I clicked on it and saw that someone else had already named mine.
That would be "Battle Royale" from Japan.
Alternately, try "Cinema Paridiso" from Italy (I think).
And if you're feeling REALLY adventurous and have a good video store near you, try "Salo, or 120 Days of Sodom" but only if you have a strong stomach and do a little research and see what the film is actually about before you watch it and dismiss is as cr@p.

Turtles Can Fly, aka Lakposhtha hâm parvaz mikonand.
It's in Kurdish, and explores the experiences of children during wartime, Iraq in particular. It's gut-wrenching and beautiful. Highly reccommended.
