Liberals claim to be open-minded. So, why is it when someone has beliefs different from them, they go nutso? My former boss told me that she thought a man was gay because he said on their date that he was saving himself for marriage. My liberal friend gets very angry if I voice an opinion about something, but she expects me to listen quietly to her opinions and not voice an opinion. Where is the open-mindedness?

Sounds like in that case open-mindedness is somewhat missing.... although Liberals assign a different meaning to "Open-Minded".... from my own experiences they tend to define that as "Agrees with my beliefs" similar to "Tolerant" being defined as "never voicing an opinion or belief against certain lifestyles".
Regardless of who uses that kind of verbiage to describe you when in a disagreement do not let it fool you... all it really means is they have run out of ideas in support of their position.

As an aside.... Open Minded is typically defined as Having a willingness to listen to new or different points of view..... and does not imply that having heard that you will necessarily agree with them.

On a slightly different note, being liberal (open-minded) has pitfalls. No matter how abhorent some thing may be one has to accept them if one claims to be liberal. Same goes for any other generalisation like that. That does not make one group of people better than the other. The above is usually discuess in philosophy classes or ethics as examples whic are relevant for most part.

The simpler answer to your question, don't label people, treat them as inviduals, and life will be simpler.

I see carl replaced his Yahoo nick. As to the question. i might say definite we are closed minded whilst it includes Republicans. Why might all people with even a million/2 a ideas hear to hurry? A liar is a liar and any one among those enormous waste of time. Why might all people think of Bush is doing what's sweet for working type human beings? Bush does no longer care interior the least what the persons want or want. info are info and that they won't be replaced. certainty is, Republicans spend far too plenty time on the spin of certainty then on the certainty and maximum I even have uncomplicated have no problem with telling lies. i understand many.

There are open minded people on both sides and close minded people on both sides. It has nothing to do with liberals and conservatives. It is a personality trait that is not exclusive to either side.

Ted Kennedy is just as close minded as George Bush.

Rudy Giuliani is just as open minded as Barack Obama.

You can't base your opinion of millions of people on your experiences with two.

Hostile, poorly worded, and ill informed opinions will be shot down by an open mind just as quickly as a closed one. If you really want to get your perspective accross to people with opposing viewpoints you should keep yourself well informed from a variety of sources, try to see their point of view and relate to it, and most importantly be polite.

so you've proven one liberal (if the person is a liberal) may be closed minded...

congratulations... where's the parade...

but to answer the question... overall, I'm not sure they are exactly "open-minded"... but in comparison to conservatives, they appear to be VERY open minded overall...

everything is relative...

like you judging an entire group by the actions of one person shows just how closed minded you are... and relatively, I'm quite open minded in comparison!

I have never done that before in my entire life. If you wish to claim otherwise I simply demand that you present your evidence supporting this egregious accusation. If you are unable to do so I demand that you stop making sweeping generalizations about a group of people about which you know absolutely nothing.

I'd say she's not a liberal then... Or, maybe she's just human?

Guess what: I'm a liberal, and I consider myself pretty open-minded. That's not to say I'm going to agree/disagree with you, but I can TRY to understand you... I suppose that shatters your generalization of liberals, huh?

Amen to that! They are fake and pretend to be what they are not... good guys. What are they doing in congress right now? NOTHING, just playing the blame game and putting the blame on everyone but themselves. They need to start talking about it and be about it. They say they will do this and that but they have done... NOTHING for our country but try to give conservatives a bad name. They are acting like children. What the hell was America thinking in putting them into power? Atleast conservatives do as they say they will.

You're using 2 people to judge a group of millions. Where's your open-mindedness?

Giving lip-service to high-minded principles is one of the main planks in the DNC Charter.
