i work in a sears, and once, a shoplifter that got away from me and my manager while we were escorting him to our office (i'm LP) ran off and knocked over a stand full of those bottles, and then picked up a girl and threw her at us

it was vinegar in those glass containers, and you could smell it for the rest of the night, and most of the next day

"White distilled vinegar or olive oil for an herb-filled bottle; or baby or mineral oil for a flower-filled bottle. "

Here's a site with instructions: http://www.onlinediscountmart.com/decorative-bottles.html

You have to go a little more than half-way down the page to get to the types of liquid used.

I've noticed that a lot of those bottles have either olive oil or vinegar in them - creating an infusion, of sorts... :)
