I have Windows XP and a Hewlett Parkard p.o.s.

The setting says I can increase it but I cannot increase it past 800 by 600 pixels...

Any ideas please??

just check the vga driver ... (display adapter)
You can see it form
Start -> Setting -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Display Adapter
has it been installed correctly ...
If it didn't ...
You must install it first ...
Just search in internet the Display Adapter Driver and Install the correct driver

if you right click on the desktop and goto properties, under settings you should be able to move the slider bar to whatever resolution you wish to have. If it is blacked out, than try changing the color quality right beside it. It is usually set to medium 32-bit color.

the only valid i see is that u r probably not having the proper graphics card or the latest and appropriate driver for ur card.

I would guess that you plug-n-pray is not working.

Try loading the monitor driver instead of the plug-n-play.

also if your monitor is old model it can't handle higher resolution and loses sync
