The question is incomplete. It looks like you're supposed to have some information about how much money was taken in. If there were 24 people at the performance, and an unknown number x of them were children, then 24 - x of them were adults. The total money taken in would be 9x + 19(24 - x), and you need to set it equal to the amount of money that was taken in, allowing you to solve algebraically for x.

With your additional information, it's 9x + 19(24 - x) = 256, and you can easily solve algebraically for x, the number of children.

A. 19 Children, 5 Adults.. (24-19=5)
19x9 = 171
5x19= 95 Total $266 (171+95)

B. 20 Children 4 Adults (24-20=4)
20x9= 180
4x19= 76 Total 256 (180+76)

C. 21 Children 3 Aduts (24-21=3)
21x9= 189
3x19= 57 Total 246 (189+57)

C 4 Children 20 Adults (24-4=20)
4x9=36
20x19= 380 Total 416 (380+36=416)

Hope this helps
