Peter Pan wasn't written by an Asian. And it wasn't written in the age of tv or flying superhereos either. Peter Pan was published as a novel in 1911 (the play is older). Its an Edwardian work, written by a Scotsman. Because the man who wrote it, James Barrie, identified heaviliy with Peter Pan, Peter Pan reflects him. Peter Pan also reflects the Llewelleyan Davies brothers, boys that Barrie was friends with. Since they were English, boys, Peter is English. Peter Pan is much more about child hood than anything else, athough one may choose to read and study Peter and Wendy (the original name of the novel) from a cultural and colonial context, and also with gender in mind.

In the era Peter Pan was written the Mysterious East was still mysterious. There were no Eastern Martial Arts. And, of course an Asian in any lead role would be outrages unless it was a Gilbert and Sullivan musical farce.

Well...

English people need fantasy, but they are very specific of the type of fantasy they want. Back in those days they wanted everyone to be English, so they made Peter English, now if any other culture had made the movie you know Peter would have been Asian because well....Asians just kick major @ss.
