Watch this video. The video is not me but of someone else. I was watching and wondered what others thought of it.
I think its an interesting idea.

It sounds good in theory, but it just wouldn't work. What about the people who have never been treated for mental illness, or have never been convicted of crimes that involve alcohol, drugs, violence. Plenty of people commit crimes like that, and/or suffer from mental illness, and are never convicted or treated. In cases like that, those things can't be held against them, and their insurance premiums would be the same as anyone else's.

A law like that would also discriminate against the poor. Think about it - insurance on something that can easily maim or kill a person. Even for a good, law-abiding citizen, the premiums would be outrageous. Many people who have never done anything wrong wouldn't be able to afford to own a gun.

There will always be a black market for guns. It doesn't matter how much we bulk up the ATF. In fact, some of the otherwise law-abiding citizens might turn to the black market to get an unregistered gun if they can't afford the insurance.

I don't see any benefit. Very few people are sued or incur high costs for gun use and criminals can't/won't pay so there simply is no problem. Mandatory car insurance was imposed on us by insurance companies because the uninsured were costing them and their customers a lot of money. There is just no logical reason for it.

My guns are insured, thankyou. I made sure my homeowners policy covers them in the event somebody breaks in and takes them. Of course, if combody breaks in and I'm home I won't need to be filing a claim, well, other than to clean up the mess.
