I don't have kids of my own but it seems if they're smart enough to use a computer they should be smart enough to spell or at least use the spellchecker.

It is because of spellchecker on computers that people cannot spell. They get lazy and don't learn how to spell- they just type and then do spellcheck and never look at the right spelling. Then when people type on forums such as this one- they don't want to bother to use spellcheck at all so they don't spell anything right. Most of the posters above me have spelling errors.

People are just lazy in general, they don't care about spelling. It is the way things are today. With shortcuts in chat rooms and email that is how people write! But, it is adults too! But it is hard to understand, cause there is a spellchecker. And even those who are not English speaking can use spellcheck :)

Well, there are three theories put forth depending upon which group you listen to:

A. Ebonics is a language - Remember this one! Some folks really pushed this agenda hard, but, it was a pack of lies, created for a political purpose. Democrats are really stupid on the whole Ebonics thing. Lots of these kids speak Ebonics, and more are learning it every day. Hip Hop, Rap, and the hollywood promotions of drug culture are 'cool'. NOT.

B. Government Schools - Just push 'em through, until graduation. Then, they become someone elses problem...
This is what the government drones believe. Hey, it is all the same money, the taxpayer's! Teach them now, or feed them later...

C. The NEA says we shouldn't test teachers. Here's the result of that! Kids who can't read, nor write.

Well, not everyone here is a native English speaker and some people just aren't very good at spelling. If I can understand what they mean that is the important thing.

It's largely an attitude problem, and they don't think it's important. As long as the feel that way, nothing will change.

Also, the "text messaging" lingo with alternate spellings and abbreviations has effected them to great extent.
