Don't know... Diamonds are purdyful though. And dog's are um, sometimes compared to men.... :\ Dunno if that's funny or not. Probably not if you're a guy...

Stereotypes due to commercial advertising is my guess. Also, I think it's interesting what metaphoric and philosophical sense that the terms have.

Take the diamonds. Women are known to be modest, honesty, and not very self-centered. But beautiful diamond jewelry is the one thing most women cannot turn down, which makes them seem a little materialistic, right? Not necessarily all of us, but to some men that could be the case.

With the dogs, men are hard-working individuals who don't really show their emotions (well at least some of the ones I've known.) Men who interact with these animals are bound to show affection, because of a simplistic connection - both love the outdoors, love having fun, etc. All stereotypical views of men and women, and of course, dogs.

There could be many other reasons. But those are all I could think of - hope that helped!

I'd rather get a dog than a diamond. A diamond doesn't wag it's tail, curl up in your lap or at your feet, or make you laugh when you are feeling down. Though, someday I might want a ring (with or without diamond) that meant something special... But it's the meaning that matters- not the diamond.

You know, I don't really think that's true - I think it's just a gimmick created by the jewelers. I'm a woman, and I'd much rather have a dog than a diamond! Dogs ARE best friends - unconditional love. Diamonds are just material things.

I don't know. I am a girl and I don't have any diamonds, and my dog is absolutely my best friend...

And I also agree that in the phrase "man's best friend" just refers to humans in general, not really men only.

I like diamonds, but my dogs are my best friend so that is not always true!!!

That is not always true sometimes it is the other way around. (ha! ha!) I'd rather have the dog any day.

To the person who said when their husband leaves they can cash their diamonds in doesn't know the markup on jewelry. You won't get much for second hand diamonds.
Keep the dog for protection.

Actually, I don't like diamonds nearly as much as I like dogs. So, I guess that's only true in some cases.

A dog is a man's best friend because they are loyal to men. And diamond's are a girls best friend because when your husband leaves you, you can cash them in.
