As long as he's swimming normally otherwise, I wouldn't think it's a cause for alarm. I've had other cichlids that would do this - or swim into the current from a powerhead.

Sounds like he thinks he's just entertaining himself.

If he's having trouble with normal swimming, at least try adjusting the current on the filter. He might be having a problem with the swim bladder, which is usually caused by not enough fiber in the diet. See "swim bladder disorder" in this link for some foods to try feeding to help him get over this: http://www.fish-disease.net/diseases.htm

Sometimes fish will do that if they are "itchy" they may also "flick' themselves against rocks or other surfaces. It could be a parasite, or something with the water quality or even ich. I'd first do a full test of your water if you haven't already (many pet stores will do this for free, just bring in about 1 cup of tank water) , then look for other signs like white spots, red gills, or anything else abnormal.
It also could be nothing, he could just have a regular old itch, or just be doing it for entertainment.
Good luck to you.

it seems too be a cause for concern , you do not provide enough details to diagnose the problem. try observing it a little closer. check for ick, fungus, parasites, feeding habits (regularly), and hole in head syndrome. it could be anything without more information.

He's just getting curious and wants to explore the water current. He is not sick or anything, just let him be.
