I can't decide which one I liked best. I love the Swinging Sixties, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals and pretty much anyone from that era. But the 1970's were also awesome; Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, David Bowie. The 80's weren't that bad, I love Michael Jackson's Thriller album and Pat Benatar. I'm not a big 90's fan though, I thought music kind of went downhill with the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears and please let's not even talk about today's "music." So what's your favorite music era?

Oh yes I completely forgot about grunge coming from the 90s, Nirvana was awesome. And of course I also forgot Motown, especially The Temptations in the 60s.

All eras! I was so lucky; I had an opportunity to hear old victrola (sp?) records, the kind you play on a player that you have to crank. They were from the early 1900's and absolutely amazing. The music was so charming and at times the words to the songs were surprisingly naughty. Then I heard some other music on another occasion from the 30's-50's that was incredible. The groups you mention from the 60's were absolutely genius. I also like the 70's rock as well as the mellower tunes and then 'new wave' from the 80's. The 90's up to now has truly been a great new era as well, although I haven't figured out quite how to describe it. I just can't pick a favorite. But thanks for the opportunity to think and talk about it. I totally love music!

If I had to choose one decade it would be the 60's.because that was the decade rock was first taken seriously as a musical genre.(There were some great songs in the 50's but many people thought that rock and roll was a passing fad)

However, looking at it from a broader perspective, I think that the best music (not counting classical) was written and performed between roughly 1925 - 1985. Those years gave us thousands of great songs and wonderful memories. I've been collecting songs from those years and am fortunate to have an extensive collection (over 20000 songs) of blues, jazz, swing, country, folk, Broadway, R&B , doo wop, rock and roll, soul, heavy metal, new age, punk, alternative, grunge, early old school rap, etc. I probably left out a few, but you get the idea.

The70's had that great soul and R&B sound (Stylistics, Earth Wind and Fire, Staple Singers, Marvin Gaye, etc). They also had great progressive and hard rock (ZZ top, early Genesis, The Strawbs etc) and disco (Donna Summers, Chic, Boney M etc). Plus it was the start of new wave that launched into the 80s (Blondie, B52s, Devo, The Cure) The 80's were good in that it was the start of early real alternative music (The Smiths, Iggy Pop, Tears for Fears) and some pretty good hard rock (The Cult, Guns and Roses) and dance (Bronski Beat, Pet Shop Boys, Exposé). And the 90's had great alternative (Portishead, Cranberries, Garbage), Rock (Collective Soul, Alanis Morissette, Blues Traveller) and Eurodance (Crystal Waters, Corona, La Bouche) and the start of hip-hop (Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mystikal etc). And today we have Green Day, Nelly Furtado, and Fergie.

But then again even though I wasn't around in the 1930s
the jazz music was pretty awesome (Harry James, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan).

the 90's had a lot of great music that went far beyond backstreet boys and britney spears. that was just the top 40 pop music. in fact, a lot of that hip music they play in commercials now came from 1990's Alternative rock-- the music era that stands out most to me.

to me, 1990's Alternative rock is very nostalgic. this stuff i remember hearing on the radio while washing cars, or hanging out at the beach. this is music that just reminds me of just awesome summer days. aw, simple times when i was just a boy... good times. these songs just come alive on the radio and just give me that remembrance of things past moment. very proust.
anyway, what was so cool about Alternative rock is that there was so much diversity. Yes, diversity. I can't get into the details, cos im too lazy, but my itunes is full of just great music from the 90's. There's a lot of obscure stuff that just really rocks. Sure there was grundge, but there was trip hop, shoegaze, electronic, punk, ska, brit pop, and just lots of really cutting edge indie rock. This stuff was classic. Some popular examples:

Radiohead
Smashing Pumpkins
Beck
Medicine
Weezer
Janes Addiction
Oasis
Pixies
Nine Inch Nails
My Bloody Valentine
Morrissey
Bjork
REM
crannberries
cardigans
cocteau twins
james
U2
Nirvana
Oasis
Elastica
Blur
Sleeper
Massive Attack
Tricky
Chemical Brothers
Rage Against the Machine
Soundgarden
Pearl Jam
Belly
Portishead
Green Day
Breeders
Primal Scream
Filter
Gin Blossoms
311
No Doubt
Rancid
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Whatever, the list goes on, i can't name them all! There's tons of obscure stuff too, i can't even think of right now. just go check em out!

Gotta be the 80s. The era where r&b and rap music were lyrically sound. Yup and the 80s gave us the powerhouse r&b group, New Edition. Plus there was also the Motown veterans such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. There was MJ and Teena Marie.

Arg, I can't choose between the 60's or the 70's.
My favorite band is Pink Floyd, which is technically the 70's, but my favorite albums by them were in the 60's.
The 70's rocked (don't forget Boston...) but the 60's had the Hippies AND the British Invasion.
I guess I would choose the 60's just cause thats when all the great jam bands roamed.
