Sounds like a typical Oscar to me. It can take them a week or so to really adjust to new surroundings and in that time they may not eat well, might lay on their side on the bottom of the tank, swim weird and a host of other things to drive you out of your mind with worry. If you have had him less than a week or so, don't worry about it and just feed him what he will eat, he'll come around eventually, that's just Oscars for you.

Oscars are very active fish and usually respond to their owners. If he is not, he might be sick. Look for signs like white dots (ick) or fuzzy patches (fungus). Any pet store will have meds you can add to the tank. Also check the chems in your tank, you might need to do a cleaning and partial water change - make sure you treat water for chlorine. Good luck!

The best thing you can do is make sure his cage is clean. I would test your water for amonia, pH, nitrates, and nitrites, to make sure the water is good quaulity. If it's not, that could be the reason your fish won't eat. You can buy kits to test these things at stores such as Petco or Petsmart.

If the water shows good quality, I would consult a fish specialist to see what the problem is.
