My kitchen has been invaded by small insects that look like a gnat, but don't have any wings. They are approx 2-3mm in size and I have seen one of them jump to avoid me killing it. They have gotten into everything in my pantry that was not in a can or sealed in a plastic container. They seem to especially like sugar and baking mixes (like muffin mix, etc.). Does anyone have a clue what kind of bug they might be???

Hey, I'm in Kansas too. I've had bugs like that, but they came in with a plant I received as a gift. I was never infested.

I looked through the KSU extension site and didn't find anything. I thn checked the county extension service for Johnson County and they have an "ask the experts" page.

I don't know how fast they would respond, or what county you are in, but you could try your county extension service.

It sounds like weevils, except to my knowledge they do not jump. You may try putting some in a bag and check with the your county health department, a nursery, or a local college, to see if they can help you with identifying the insect. Good luck with this!

In my experience as a pest control tech. it sounds like grain weevles. The best way to get rid of them is get rid of cereal boxes and other sources of food for them. Contact an exterminator and he will have you empty out all your cabinets and spray the inside of them. You will have to wait 3 hours before you can put anything back in them. That usually does an excellent job.

I remember these bugs being in our neighbors farm, when I was a child, where they had hens and dogs, If I am not mistaken, they bite like mosquitoes. Do you have pets?
