My '94 Isuzu trooper has started sounding a little bit like a diesel when I turned it on. It is also very loud and makes a weird noise everytime I press on the accelerator. Also, when I turn my car off and get out, I can smell a lot of carbon dioxide. Is this a muffler problem or something else?

Your muffler "muffles" the sound. If you are hearing loud noise when you hit the accelerator, you most likely have a bad muffler. Have it checked out at your local garage. They can assess the damage and give you an estimate of the cost to replace the muffler.

Chow!!

The noise could be a bad muffler, except for the weird noise when you press the accelerator. Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas. You are not smelling it. You are smelling other components of your car's exhaust. Usually, a bad muffler will make a loud, "putter, putter" kind of sound.

Diesel sound: those are the lifters in the engine---isuzu troopers are NOTORIOUS for that noise---mine has made it since the very second I drove it off the new car lot 11 years ago!

Smell: yes, you probably have a pinhole in the muffler or the exhaust pipe---you need to get it replaced.

Cost: 149$ for me, from front to back.

Carbon dioxide is odorless. If you're smelling a pungent exhaust then you're cat conv. is bad & you're probably running RICH. The diesel sound is probably the "death rattle" no really its probably you're timing chain or the timing chain tensioner. I suspect you have a 2.2 liter cavalier motor. If this is you're motor than i'd bet the diesel sound is the serpentine belt tensioner or timing chain doing something it shouldnt. If its the timing chain & u continue to drive it then u run the risk of it slipping or breaking & bending you're valves. VERY EXPENSIVE engine damage can result if you dont get this checked out by a competent mechanic!

carbon dioxide, is odorless and colorless, you can not sense it. try a tune up, and double check timing. when a gasoline engine runs hot enough to ignite the air fuel mixture before the plug fires, then you get what is called pre-ignition. while you have the plugs out, you may want to do a compression test, and make sure you are not getting too high a reading. i have had that happen to my vehicle. simple fix if this is the case.

Take it to a muffler shop and get an estimate

this is a common problem, It should be the flex section in the front. In my shop we just replace the flex section. It cost to repair about 150 to 200 bucks. but it can be done. find a shop thats good at welding. otherwise your looking at about 3/350 for a new pipe, possibly more

Yes, its the muffler but I would suggest that you have your complete exhaust system checked out before someone dies.

most likley it is. if it makes more of a farting sound then u have a hole in ur muffler. otherwise check if its all screwed in correctly and not loose. if u still have probs then take it to a good mechanic.
