The Oil pan holds 5 quarts, but the oil filter will take some additional oil; newer(smaller) filters around half a quart, and older style around a full quart

ford dipstickes have been incorrectly marked since 1983, unless the enjine was made by mazda. that engine should take either 5 or 6 quarts. start with five, if the engine reads a half quart low, you are fine, that is full. i know that this sounds like a load of whatever, but this the industry that i have worked in for the last 14+ years.

i would get 6 quarts.
when you put in the new oil filter, fill it with oil first before screwing it in, and lubricate the top of it with oil.
put in 5 qts, go drink a beer or watch tv for about 20 mins or more while the oil settles down into the oil pan.
check the oil level and use the last quart to get it to full if needed.

I seem to remember it taking 5 quarts, I'd get six quarts and put in 4, then check the level.

When you go to the auto parts store to purchase the oil, filter etc., just ask them. They will be able to tell you how many quarts and what weight of oil is best for your car.
