Life is dangerous. The question you have to ask yourself is whether you want to truely LIVE, or simply exist?? Mountain biking, whitewater paddling, parachuting, surfing or skateboarding - they can all easily kill you if you aren't careful. But you have to take some risks to get any enjoyment out of life.
As for motorcycling, sure there is some danger. Roads and traffic are a part of it, more or less, depending on where you live. Bikes are safer than ever , however - better tire technology, better brakes... heck, Honda is developing a Gold Wing with air bags!
The real key to safe riding, however, is the rider. A recent study in Oregon showed that over 60% of accidents these days are the fault of the rider, not an automobile running into you, like many people seem to think! These accidents are generally due to riding errors that could have been avoided with proper training, skill development, and protective gear.
So, if you seriously want to live your life to the fullest, and you think motorcycling is part of the answer, I say go for it! BUT - get the proper training and experience so you need to mitigate the risk and fully enjoy the experience. Take an MSF course, or go to a school like Jason Pridmore's STAR school, Stayin' Safe school, or Motorcycle Riding School. Get some riding friends who are safe and responsible. By all means, get the right gear!
Have fun, enjoy your life to the fullest!

There are risks in everything that you do, riding a motorcycle can be dangerous but with proper training and the more experience you get, the more alert you will become to potential dangers. If you are considering whether or not to ride, I would suggest you sign up for a motorcycle safety course. I have been riding back when Florida only required a driver's license to ride a motorcycle so I didn't have to take the course. After 25 years of riding I finally took the course and learned some things I didn't know. It is well worth it to ensure you will have a safe ride. Safety also is dependent on the person driving, if you drive crazy or impaired your risks are much greater.

Motorcycles are dangerous, but so is driving a car, crossing the street, petting stray dogs that foam at the mouth. Everything has a danger level. I've had a motorcycle crash, and I have avoided a few that I wouldn't be able to in a car. Honestly keep a level mind about yourself and you should be good. Keep speed to the track. And as other people have mentioned respect the bike and the road, find a local riding group by you, and start small, and trust me you'll have soem rides that you'll never forget.

As long as you know what you are doing, you pay close attention to your surroundings, and you dress appropriately you should be very safe. Take a class if you can that will help prepare you and drive in low traffic areas to better prepare yourself. Also remember that most motorists aren't looking for motorcycles. Motorcycles riding is a blast and very exhilarating, but just like everything else there is great responsibility. Prepare yourself and you will be fine.

Motorcycles aren't all that dangerous own their own if you ride sensibly, it's the people driving 4 wheels that make it dangerous. My point being that it depends a lot on where you ride and what the traffic is like.

Motorcycles are not dangerous people are. That being said of course you have a much better chance to walk away from a car crash with no injuries than a m/c crash. Always wear the proper safety gear and dont drink and drive. You will be fine.

They are very dangerous.. I am lucky to be old and not have died.. but I still ride and would not change the fun that it has been even if it had killed me.. You have to choose how to live your own life. You can get hit by a train while driving a Hummer... You have to choose somewhere between locking yourself in your room or going out and trying to live life enjoying what ever you want to do within the limits of what you are comfortable with.. P.S. I refuse to jump out of any airplane while the motors are still running.. see we all have our limits..

Sure are. Los Angeles Times reports 40 deaths per million miles. That works out to one death every 25,000 miles.
Now, my Yamaha Virago has about 80,000 miles on it, so it should have killed three people already and be on its way to killing a fourth. My police motorcycle had about 75,000 miles on it, and my Honda Nighthawk had about 56,000 miles on it, so a lot of people must have died for my motorcycles.

Don't drive...:
If drinking,
If not really engaged,
If bad weather...
I don't use my bike for work, b/c I don't know my mood or weather when I'm going to leave later in the day. For me, it's a nice (very nice) toy for weekend 1-3 hour outings. I'm lucky b/c I have lots of parks and slow-poke roads around here to just have fun with.
