Don't worry about the ink fading away. If you want the documents, just ask your father. If he can't or wont give them to you, then go to the appropriate offices, like the Social Security Administration, and get yourself a new copy, with brand new ink. Same for your birth certificate, etc., etc.

I'm sorry to hear about your father.

You can request a certified copy of your birth certificate from the records clerk in the state of your birth. Do a search online for your state government offices and you'l find info about how to do this.

To replace or update a social security card, go to the local SS office. It's very easy.

Never carry those documents with you - if stolen, they are a gateway to identity theft. Keep them in a locked and fireproof safe at your home, or in a bank safety deposit box, which can be rented for a nominal fee.

To replace your card, no charge, go to the social security office. To get a certified copy of your birth certificate, go to your local bureau of vital statistics. Usually, for the birth certificate, there is a small charge. NEVER store your personal papers in your computer.
Keep all in a fireproof box.
