Magic 8 balls are a game. However, you can put it to creative use. If you have a problem you haven't solved, give the Magic 8 ball a shot. Sometimes it helps you to think more creatively. hey, if you already have it, at least now you have a use for it.
A similar method (using cards) but more extensive is employed by A WHACK ON THE SIDE OF THE HEAD: How You Can Be More Creative by Roger von Oech (still sold at Amazon)..

no... they are just for fun. How is a plastic ball supposed to know what you are saying, and then say the right answer out of the 8 answers it has? Hope this helps!! :-)

NO!!! Of course not. They have a 3D triangle inside the ball and has an answer for each side on it. So if it does work, it's just a coincidence.
