What has worked for me is to eat 5 to 6 small meals per day. A lot of times overeating can be a sign of some type of psychological disorder.(Its not what you are eating, its what is eating you). So that should be taken into consideration as well. The simplist way is to just stop eating when you feel full and learn to recognize when you are full. Eat foods that are high in fiber so you get at least 35grams per day. This will help you feel full.

Don't think so much on what you will eat, nor what food will be ready and available for you. Food is food. Is food your god, or is it "just food?" Focus instead on the poor, the impoverished and the desperate. Think about the starving children in Africa and perhaps you can pray and fast for them (when I say fasting, I mean abstaining from foods that you usually consume). You are able to look at the photos of the starving men, women and children from the world. This might actually help you. I have had similar problems. Now I realize thae food is just part of the material world. It's not the most important! Peace to you. :)

After a meal, I brush my teeth. Food doesn't taste as good on freshly brushed teeth so I don't go back and get seconds (thirds, fourths, etc.). I chew gum while I cook to avoid sampling what I cook. I also go to bed early to avoid late night snacking. I keep rice cakes and fresh veggies on hand for when I feel I must munch something when I'm not hungry.

Chug, a bottle of water after eating a couple saltine crackers. That'll get you full faster.
Also, use smaller plates and silver ware. It gives you the illusion that you eating more than you actually are.
Also have baby carrots in the fridge at all times. After dinner eat as many baby carrots as you want and drink water with them. It gets you full faster.
These help me...

If you get hungry, drink 2 glasses of water (you should drink 8 a day anyway) and wait 15 minutes. IF you are still hungry afterwards, eat something.
Everytime you eat something you deem as "fattening", make a line on your hand or something. Then everytime you think about eating something fattening again, you can see how much bad stuff you've already eaten.

I have this natural supplement called Chitosan (also called Chitosorb). It is fibre (indigestible) and expands in your stomach, making you feel full much quicker. It also absorbs the fat from your meal (and a LOT of water, too).
I find that getting out of the house makes a big difference to how much I eat. When I'm bored, I eat. When I'm occupied, I only eat when my stomach tells me its hungry.

I do not ever have hunger pangs so I don't remember to eat. Since I have lost much of my sense of taste I don't think about food much. I have to force myself to remember. But I keep gaining weight even though I try to eat well balanced meals. I just do not get enough exercise.

I do it the same way I quit smoking. Whenever I feel the urge to eat I tell myself NO! NO! NO! NO! When I do eat, I have taught myself to stop before I eat too much.
