depends who exactly you know and how you measure success. If you want money knowing someone will go far. If you wish to have some skill, knowing a master will be a great benefit but you must learn and come to know yourself.

More often it's who you know not what you know, not necessarily to be successful but to get your foot in the door and given more opportunities BUT you may not be successful at those opportunities or happy in them.

It depends on who you have to impress. Some are more impressed by what you know but it seems that the majority go by who you know unless you have already achieved something and have a recognizable name.
