im buying RAM. Some costs 85 dollars for 2 1 GB sticks... while others with that much cost 250 dollars. what difference would this make?

the speed and quality of the RAM.

you need to make sure that whatever ram you buy, your motherboard can use it.(and im talking about the type and speed)

for example,
-DDR2 ram is slower than DDR3 ram.
-SDRAM is faster than both of those.
-pc2700 ram is slower than pc3200 ram.

its pretty simple to figure out what type of ram is faster than the others, but you need to make sure that your motherboard will take that type of ram before you buy it.

The expensive ones are high performance RAM. They are popular among gamers and overclockers because of low latency (runs faster) and/or overclocking ability.

If you and your motherboard are not capable of tweaking those high performance RAM, better stick to the "value RAM" variety.
