Human beings inherit 23 chromosomes(the conponents of genes)from father and 23 chromosomes from the mother--46 chromosomes in all. The "combination of genes" represents the number of combined genetic material(chromosomes), which constitute the genetic makeup of an organism.
The gametes are obtained during the stages of cell division. There are two stages: meiosis and meitosis. Meiosis is reductive cell division going from the Diploid number of chromosomes to the haploid number and mitosis is the opposite.
