You'll find hatches & wagons do, & sedans don't. The wiper would have to be tiny on a sedan because the screen is so short. Hatches & wagons have higher screens so it's worth having the wiper to clear a good section of the glass.

I even have an 05 Matrix XR AWD hatch and that i've got a rear wiper. the hot Mazda 6 sedan has a rear wiper to boot. So did the Acura RSX. One huge reason is that because SUVs have larger roofs, water has a tendency to roll right this moment off the roof and over the glass hindering inventive and prescient. On a sedan the rear windshield is raked (angled) so water flows precise off of it and into the channels alongside the trunk for drainage. yet another excuse is the top of the motor vehicle. greater spray is created via an SUV or hatchback by using fact they don't have long trunk factors previous the rear wheels. to that end the vortex of air created via those automobiles pulls the spray coming from below the motor vehicle up and lower back so it covers the rear. next time interior the rain take a peek at an SUV employing via and additionally you will see the spray curtain at the back of it. What kills me is the individuals who've rear wipers and by no skill use them.

They put rear wipers on estate cars, hatch backs and MPVs because unlike a car with a boot the rear window is subject to water and dirt being thrown up by the rear wheels

Certain shapes of cars tend to suck water spray back onto the rear screen, others don't. Saloon cars seem to avoid this problem.
Sometimes the "economy" model of a car won't have a rear wiper to save money, although this is rare now.
