Delta Sleep System. Just try it...it does work. It's a cd that uses brain wave technology to help you go to sleep. I have struggled long term w/ insomnia and this was the first thing that worked for me and didn't leave me groggy the next morning. Melatonin in low doses also helps. Use of melatonin should be limited to just a few days...it helps set your internal clock.
If your problem is falling asleep...try the Delta sleep system.
If your problem is staying asleep...let Delta play all night.
I struggled w/ both falling and staying asleep. I have the delta loaded in my i pod...works like a charm.
Strong chamomile tea is also very helpful. tension tamer tea works too (celestial seasonings).
And, of course observe all the other sleep hygiene suggestions probably listed on yahoo health as they do help not solve our problems w. insomnia.

Try sleeping a little earlier than normally, it usually feels much better in the morning. Also, dont sleep with your stomach full, it can be discomforting and it slows down your metabolism. Also change up your bed, instead of a flat pillow sleep on two. It can make such a huge difference...trust me. Not only pillows, but switch up the way you sleep. For instance if you sleep on your back all night, try sleeping on your side or even your stomach. These small things actually make big differences!

What it comes down to to your lifestyle. It is good to have a good diet and exercise program.
Try going to bed at the same time every night, make sure that your bed is comfortable to you. Reading a book could help.
But personally I would not take Any OTC meds to help you sleep. Try the herb Passionflower in a tea right before you go to bed. That should help and is not addictive.

Bach Rescue Remedy--Sleep formula. You can get this at a health food store. This little remedy has saved my life. I take just a few drops each night in a cup of water and I sleep so much better and wake up so much clearer.

My friend told me not to do anything in my bed other then sleep, because then your body gets use to doing things in bed and doesn't want to sleep. Also keeping active during the day (running or walking) can help at night when you are ready to go to bed.

Try to do something relaxing before you go to bed. Don't eat big meals less than 3 hours before sleeping. Try meditating/deep breathing. Sometimes it also helps to relax you if you put a pillow under your knees (straightens the spine.)
