That should be a question for you to address with the homeowners. Will they be checking in with you? I would say you should honor whatever agreements you made with them and if that wasn't covered then use your own judgement. What if something were to happen during the hours you were not there to protect the home, pets, etc? Your inability to sleep in a new environment may be based more on the fact that it's unfamiliar to you. Relax. Maybe you could sleep on the sofa or bring a sleeping bag of your own? Mainly if YOU had hired someone to housesit, would you mind if they slept at home??? If and when they phone in, ask. Otherwise continue whatever agreement you had made.

You should have straightened out what the expectations are before you started. Do you have an emergency number for them? Call them and ask. When I house sit, I always sleep over. If I'm really tired, I don't have a problem sleeping somewhere else: some people have really comfortable beds. Drink a little warm milk or try taking a warm bath. Also, one time there was a fire nearby, and because I slept over I got the cat out in time: that's the whole reason behind house sitting. If you're being paid, I think you have a responsibility to sleep over.
