First convert them from mixed fractions:

3 1/5 => 16/5
2 1/4 => 9/4

Give them a common denominator, the lowest number that both 4 and 5 go into is 20. So, multiply 16/5 by 4/4 and 9/4 by 5/5 to obtain a common denominator.

Add the results together.

Step by step and how and why!!

3 1/5 + 2 1/4.......first thing find the LCD (lowest common denominator - You have a 5 and a 4 - do the times tables
5,10,15, 20, 25
4, 8, 12, 16, 20 stop - there is a 20 in both sets so 20 is our LCD.

3 1/5 = 3 ?/20...multiply the 5 by 4 to get 20 so times the 1 by 4 and you get 4 (what you do to the bottom you do to the top

3 1/5 = 3 4/20...Now we have to change the 2 1/4 to 2 ?/20,
2 1/4 = 2 ?/20 -multiply the 4 by 5 so mutiply the 1 by 5
2 1/4 = 2 5/20.. OK, now we have changed our fractions and are ready to add. Always make sure the fractions have the same denominators - See how we found them? By using the timestables.

Here is what we have so far:

3 1/5 + 2 1/4

= 3 4/20 + 2 5/20.add the whole numbers then the numerators

= 5 9/20

That is how you add fractions when the denominators are different. When you subtract fractions you would go through the same steps just aubtract instead of add the numbers but the rest would be exactly the same.

For addition, you can keep the integers and the fractions separate. That means you are working with smaller numbers.
3 1/5 + 2 1/4
Add the integers: 3 + 2 = 5.
Common denominator for 5 and 4 is 20.
1/5 + 1/4
= (4 + 5) / 20
= 9 / 20.
Reunite the integer and the fraction:
3 1/5 + 2 1/4 = 5 9/20.

the answer is 5 9/20. First, make the fractions equal by finding the lowest common denominator. It's 20 in this case. You find it by figuring out which numbers are common between the two numbers in the denominator when u multiply them by other numbers. Anyways, multiply the 1st fraction by 4/4 and the second by 5/5. (Remember 4/4= 1 and 5/5= 1, so you're really only multiplying by one.) Now you should have 3 4/20 + 2 5/20. Now add the fractions and add the whole numbers. You should get 5 9/20.
