The last job I had was for a placement over 3 years ago, the guy I used to work for/with is no longer there. I'm not a member of any professional organizations or churches and I don't really know anyone here except family. I have been in school and need a job for the summer (i.e. asap) to save up for next year.

You can always use the HR department of your latest place of employment as a reference. If you have been attending school, you can use the teachers as a reference - just be sure to ask them first if you could. If you're young, and looking for a summer job, I don't think the places you'll be applying for will expect a long list of references. That takes time to build.

I agree with the last answerer. Start volunteering somewhere, even if its just for a week, and then ask for a reference. Some places like grocery stores will take you without experience, and then you can use those as references for a better job, while you get paid by the grocery store.

Ask your teachers for references. Former coworkers can also be used (if you kept in contact with them). In future, you might want to get a letter of recommendations from employers or even clients, before leaving an organization. Hope this Helps!!!

when you don't have work contacts to draw on for references, you can draw on people who know you well... not someone who will paint a rosy picture of you but someone who will be able to share your strengths - integrity, reliability, dependability, resourcefullness...

you are still young and can start now to develop a network of supporters who can speak for you... you say you are not affiliated in your community - therein lies an excellent opportunity to create references and even add lines to your resume... volunteer some of your time - a senior center, a nursing home, the public library... there you will not only amass recognition among staff but you can also tap into the people you serve for testimonials.
