I don't think most people do it on purpose or to be hurtful. I think it's just human nature to be curious and wonder (Unless it's obvious) what happened to cause the person to end up in a wheelchair to begin with.
I'm not trying to make excuses for people or minimize your feelings, because I know it would bother me if I was in your position. I'm sorry you have to go through that and I hope people will realize how uncomfortable this makes others feel.

There is one young girl I see almost every day in a wheelchair. I don't stare at her, but every time I see her I wonder what happened that she needs a wheelchair. She seems happy and well adjusted to her situation. I don't think people really intend to be rude. I think once you start to get used to it, you won't even notice the glances anymore. Best wishes.

People have a tendency to get curious at unusual sights. While its true that there are a lot of people with disabilities, disability not is the norm in society where most people can move around with assistance. It's kind of like how people may stop and stare during a traffic accident or a police arrests a nearby suspect. Sometimes they wonder what it would be like to be not able to walk.

I'll betcha a nickel you used to stare too, and just did not really notice it.
People look at the unusual. It is hardwired into us and cannot be easily trained out except through familiarity.
I work around them all day long for 15 years, and barely notice them anymore... at work. Let me see one in the community, and I tend to notice it anyway.

it cant be helped if u drop 100 green m@ms on the floor and one red one the red one is gonna be the one u notice and look at . visually the wheelchair does not blend in.its not that people are trying to be rude or want to be rude atleast most dont its just instincts built into us and most if not all animals that can see.
