I would say a 'world-changing' person. Someone that can influence the way the world goes. Murdered is usually thought to be a mafia way of getting rid of dirt in their organization. Killings is when they murder outside their organization.
Assassinations are used to control and rid governments and political figures of dangerous opposing groups.
I love this question..but, I feel tongue tied in trying to answer it properly.

ALL politicians, regardless of position, are assassinated.
Famous people are problematic.
John Lennon is considered assassinated by many, but rebecca Schaeffer was murdered by a crazed fan.
Then, there was that Russian spy who was considered assassinated, so it gets confusing
