Well it seems...based upon your list (I read the article in the BBC as well)...that we arewell on our way. Keep in mind that the Republicans want a UNITARY EXECUTIVE as well as a one party system...hence the six year reign of terror for the dems by the previous congress.

1) The internal enemy is liberalism and dissent
2) The gulag(s) are all around the world including Cuba (Gitmo)
3) The Thug Caste are the contracted military ie, Blackwater...who are immuned to ANY prosecution of wrong doings HERE (New Orleans) or in Iraq.
4) Internal Surveillance without court approval has been ongoing...Choice Point...a private data retrieval service covers what the constitution does not allow our government to cover.
5) Harrassing citizens groups has been ongoing in this administration as well. Anyone who has protested anything this administration has done is placed on the TSA's "no-fly list".
6) Arbitrary detention and release has occurred with many men of Middle Eastern descent. Some have gone on to sue the US Government for false imprisonment.
7) Target key individuals: Examples: Cindy Sheehan; Valerie Plame; Joe Wilson; John Kerry; ANYONE who is high profile and disagreeswith this administration is destroyed via reputation and worse.
8) Control the press: "nuff said!!!
9) Dissent equals treason: Just recently Tom Delay said that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have bordered on a treasonous act by sending Bush a bill that demands a withdrawal date. Cheney; Kkkarl Rove; Bill O'Lielly; Limbaugh; Hannity; Beck et al, calls ANYONE who disagrees with the Republican/neocon agenda TRAITORS.
10) The steady erosion of constitutional mandates have been eroding with impunity: Free speech; the right to protest; theright to a fairtrial; habeas corpus; the right to HUMANE TREATMENT by one's captors; etc.

However, I do not see where WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES should stand by and let these things take hold. Thats why the show of defiance by the Dems and some Republicans in congress. Hundreds of thousands of Americans of all ethnic backgrounds lost their lives in wars since the Revolutionary war to preserve LIFE; LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT FREEDOM.

In my opinion this experiment we call democracy is FAR FROM OVER YET!! Here's what we need to do:

2) Expanding Voter Participation
3) Increasing Voter Choice with Instant Runoff Voting
4) Scrap Winner-Take-All Elections
5) Direct Election of the President
6) Overhaul the US Senate
7) Reclaim the Airwaves
8) Minimize Money's Rule
9) Reform the Supreme Court
10) Restore Faith in Government:"Government is Good for You"

If they kill each other in battle the fight will be over entitlements. The time frame will most likely be when the baby-boomers retirement bill collides with the dwindling fossil fuel energy crisis.
