Why do people ask questions where their pet is obviously injured and wonder what they should do? Questions like my animal is not really breathing right, limping, has open wounds, oozing things from various areas... Then they say I will wait a week or 2 then take it to the vet. If you or your child was injured would wait a week or 2 to go see a doctor?

I appreciate all answers given. I am mainly talking about the obvious where a pet is truly injured. Like my pet has labored breathing, if you couldn't breath no matter what time of the day you would go to the ER. There are vets out there that will take emergency appts. It might cost a little money, but when you choose to get a pet you are responsible for that pet. Why is the most common answer take your pet to the vet?

Because they wanted to have a Pet but are too lazy or cheap, or they did not have the resources to pay for the cost of having a pet. This is the thing about why we have so many dogs and cats running loose, because they don't won't or can't properly care for a pet. I rescue and foster Dogs, and I run into people like this too many times. they are the ones that should be tied up in the back yard, not the pet .

Sometimes it's a valid question, "my dog's limping" may be a worry at 10pm at night, but most cases would not need to see a vet urgently. I think experienced pet owners forget what it's like being a first time 'mum', lots of worry about doing the right thing.

The other night our little Jack Russel was really quiet following his shots, it was 11pm and I was quite concerned, but I could draw on years of experience to say, actually he is not in real danger here, and can safely wait until the morning, and I can re asses then. Sure enough first thing he was back on top form. If that had been my first dog I would of liked some more advice.

It appears that in many cases these people are asking ther questions in the middle of the night or when no vets in their area are open. They are worried or frantic about their pets and want to do something, even something as futile, in practical terms, as posting a question here. They are reaching out, you might say, so they don't feel so alone with their problem.

On the other hand, some seem to be assuaging their guilt, if they feel any, over neglecting their pet by posting a question. It may make them feel that they have "done something" when actually they have done nothing.

LOL most the time the pet is not injured. But i say at least call the vet and ask if you should bring the animal in. Thats free- for all the people want to save money.

Many times vets say people over react and there is nothing wrong with their animals...

But 2 weeks wow thats borderline animal cruelty.

I agree with Cowgirl.
And alot of people don't go to the doctor for themselves...
If my horse has a cut, I clean it and put some salve on it... if its big, or won't stop bleeeding, deep, gaping, over a joint, or starts to get infected I will first ask somone else whomight have had a similar experiance because they might know what to do. If they don't or it needs stitches, I will call the vet.

I don't understand why people aren't allowed to ask fo first aid advice. Most cuts and things don't require a vet if you do some fist aid, but there aren't many first aid for dogs books out there.

Some of these things, the vet is just gonna do somthing you can do at home.
