You cant study to be a neurosurgeon until after you have completed medical school. Med students do not have specialties, you must graduate and then do a residency in general surgery, and then residencies in neurosurgery... so you are looking at a minimum of 12 - 15 years post high school.

Your undergraduate college is only important insofar as it helps you get admitted to med school. Schools like JH and Columbia, or UCHicago, Duke, the Ivies, etc are good for premed because they have fabulous facilities, small classes and very smart students. Almost all of their premed kids will be accepted at med school. So all you have to do is get into one of the toughest schools in the USA - say Columbia which turned away hundreds of valedictorians this year - and then compete for A's against brilliant classmates.

It would be a big mistake to try to prepare for US med school at a foreign university. Mainly because they are simply not as good. In the list of the top 500 international universities compiled in China for Chinese students to use in choosing a university abroad, of the top 15 schools, only Cambridge, Oxford and Tokyo were not American.
