Practise in front of a mirror and build your confidence. It is natural to be a bit nervous when you have to speak with someone you do not know. Everyone goes through that, you will be fine.

Just try to think why people are talking to you. It is usually because the know you and like your company or they want something or information from you in which case you are at least equal to them or in the latter "more equal" because they need your help. Recognise this and it will give you more confidence.
Make notes before you telephone someone,if you think that helps you, practice in front of the mirror using the phone switched off and if you can get a friend who will practice talking with you. It doesn't matter what you talk about.

The best way to get rid of this fear, is to work as a Telephone Customer Service agent. This will overtime make you confident. Also, before you make a call, don't think about, just make the call or answer the call in a causal manner. You will be nervous if you start actually thinking about the call in a very extensive fashion.

Hi Sarah, Not a Problem, The only way to overcome this is to keep doing it. You have to try to keep talking to people face to face everyday keeping eye contact, etc. Keep talking to people over the phone also!
You just have to give your self alot of credit and BELIEVE you can do it!

Have a clear idea in your head of what needs to be said during the conversation. If it's a more relaxed type of conversation, have a few ideas ready for those awkward silences that everybody hates.
I used to be really shy but I went and got a job that forced me to change. I worked as a travel agent for a while and it helped me no end.

hi there....i know what you mean.....i worry about how i sound....i hate chatting over the phone and sometimes on my bad days i cannot speak to people face to face.
however u and i are not alone.....i have received many e-mails and read lots of questions from people who feel exactly the same. what i have been doing lately is to chat to people over the phone that i know well...and who wont judge me...i use them to practise my conversations. chat mostly to people whom u feel most comfortable with for now until u r feeling more able to chitchat and once u have practised then try chatting to practically anybody.
well this is just my advice....it may not be the best but this is the way that i'm trying to deal with my problems.
anyway good luck....let us know how u get on.
take care
