I have no idea. It is sort of like having to remember famous dates of past history. If I am not going to grow up to be a major historian, why do I need to remember all of this inane bullsh**t?

I don't know why you would say something like this. Great literature is indebted to Shakespeare. The theater is indebted to him. The movie and music businesses are also indebted to him. He is not a waste of time. This man is one of the cornerstones of literature and life. While what he wrote was not real, it had some truth to it. By the way becoming a rockstar is about more than playing an instrument, you should go to college and major in music. Then maybe you'll get past Simon on American Idol.

Ha ha - then when you write lyrics like Blue Oyster Cult and include Romeo and Juliet in them, you wont know who you are talking about. Dr Phil and Shakespeare have absolutely zero in common. One is a fake tv shrink with a bad Texas accent who likes to listen to himself rant and the other is a classic playwright who has stood the test of time and written classic works that deserve to be read and enjoyed. Good luck on American Idol .. Pax - C

So you think learning anything beyond your narrow ideas is not worthwhile? Sport, you are sadly mistaken. Learning is an ongoing thing throughout life. I learn something new everyday through the course of just living. It's a very satisfying experience to learn. Instead of running away from education, embrace it. Never know when some day something you learned may benefit you. Yes, even Shakespeare.

All great rock stars have an appreciation for literature. You will at least recognize the beauty and rhythm of Shakespeare's words, the excitement and the humor and sometimes downright ugliness. You can't be a rock star without understanding poetry and verse.
Maybe you're not interested in love and abstractions: try renting the movie "Titus." That's the one where the Queen of the Goths makes passionate lust to Saturninus the rock star and, angry with Titus, gets her two sons to rape his daughter; they cut off her tongue and hands. When Titus finds out what happened, he slaughters the two sons and cooks them and feeds them to their mother...
This is much more fun to watch than to read..

you would be surprised at purely what proportion sayings in contemporary life are taken from issues Shakespeare wrote. issues like "my coronary heart of hearts," "eaten out of homestead and homestead," and "considered greater effective days" are purely some words that all and sundry started with him. The English language is rather rather distinctive than it would be if he'd in no way existed. well then you seem to know the exact answer that you want to hear you want people to say there is no point when the point is that he revolutionized the Renaissance era by making it so that not just aristocrats could be entertained by higher ideas of theatre but also lower classes and he was brilliant satirist and if you had actually paid attention you would be able to laugh at the fact that most his plays are made up of about 25% dirty jokes but i guess all that surpass the level of thinking of someone who will spend their future sitting on a street corner begging for change as they have bombed out of the entertainment buisness by thinking that you can get by while being an airhead...you know that you also have to be able to act , to write, to be a good buisness/salesman and that you will never get signed to any record deal if you have the attitude and mental compasity of a fifth grader...just to let you know

There's more everyday English that comes from Shakespeare than you would imagine. Two things that can't be escaped in English are Shakespeare and the Bible. You meet them everyday in speech, and you should learn to recognize them.

We learn Shakespeare so we don`t betray our kings, or murder our step-brothers because of the throne.. We also learn not to pretend to be dead (poisoned to be exact), or how to make our husbands jealous.... Also, we can learn that sometimes it`s more interesting if You talk in verses, and there are more killings in one drama than in an average American film. (My Mom disagrees) And his characters are sort of medieval rockstars.

I'm guessing you have never read anything beyond Romeo and Juliet. If you want to be a member of the ignorant masses who equate everything to tv, then be my guest.
