The first convict settlement was set at Botany Bay, Australia, discovered by Captain James Cook, who named it Stingray Harbour, but later changed the name because of the variety of new plants found there by his expedition's naturalist, Joseph Banks. Plans were made to establish a convict settlement there, but when it was found that the bay area was unsuitable for habitation, the colony was moved 5 miles north to Port Jackson,later Sydney.

In my opinion, that's why Australia has such a fascinating history. (I also really like all the Australian's I've ever met and imagine their country's history could play a part in their wonderful attitude.)
