That's a very interesting question. I can't really say much about Japanese cars being better than American cars because I have no idea (IMHO, they are), but I can say that I really don't believe that Japanese cars are better than Americans (though surely some will disgree on that). I guess that depends on the going rate of steel and technical know-how vs. worker productivity, and whether we are going to quantify the soul - assuming it exists, which adds another hypothetical to the equation. I don't think anyone has done a product-person FMV comparison to date, but it would be extreme to argue that physical goods outvalue a homo sapien.

Well the good news is American cars have come along way quality wise in the past 5 years. Judging on your links; The Fusion is based on a Mazda platform. The 500 has been a very poor seller for Ford and The Focus is a fine car, but a 4 year old design which was originally designed in Europe.
Automotive magazines that make comparisons are a better marker of how good the car is. Best Resale value is also good indicator on how well the car is thought of.

I think some american car models have been getting more reliable, but are still behind japan in quality.
My own personal experience has definately been that the japanese cars have been more reliable then the US cars my family has owned. And, consumer reports consistantly rates US cars lower on the quality front, especially in low end models.
I don't get the anti consumer reports attitude people have as they have a very concise and broad approach and it is a prety large conspiracy theory if you think and independent publication is going out of it's way to make US cars look bad.
I think the problem is that US companies focus soly on marketing. It's like they know they have a negative image with many people on the quality front, but instead of improving the quality as a long term play, they instead just pump money into marketing to try to convince people how reliable and great the cars are without actually improving it much. US companies are also much more focused on features (looks, power windows, etc) then the making the actually parts that count the most better. (engine etc).
Japanese culture on the other hand is is very perfectionistic, and driven to making even the cheapest models solid.
I actually wanted to buy a US car last time I purchased, but had a limited budget for a small car, and the US cars just don't have anywhere near the quality.

Ask anyone who has owned a Japanese car, even a cheap one and also owned a Ford or GM Product. There is no comparison, hasn't been for years. When you buy a Jap car, expect to get 100,000 miles without any major problems - the little plastic knobs won't fall off, the trim will be alligned and the body won't be rusted through in 5 years. Try to find that in an American car.

depends on wat u use ur car for. in my opinion sum japs are better than american cars, not out of the factory but after a few mods they'd blow an american car off the charts. i dont care wat statistics say i took my mitsubishi eclipse to the dyno and got a WAY better reading compare to my friends mustang gt.
