Your local medical center should have a Women's Health Center. If they do not offer a free clinic, they should be able to refer you to one in your area.

When you ask about a school sex clinic, I am unsure what you are referring to... are you already in college? If so, there should be a campus health center which will either provide you with the service or recommend a local clinic to you.

Planned Parenthood centers also offer general Gynecological services.

Since this is your first visit, the The doctor (or examining clinician, which may be a Nurse Practitioner [NP] or Physician's Assistant [PA]) should meet with you before your examination to review the history paperwork you will need to fill out before the visit, and to ask you about any concerns or questions you may have. Make sure you schedule the visit at least a week before your period is due and at least a week after your last period has ended. They will want to know the date of your last period and how regular they are, so keep track of them. They will guide you through the exam, and if it is a male clinician, they typically will also have a female nurse in the room to help you feel safer and more comfortable (they usually stay near the door or the top of the exam table). After the exam, you will again meet with the doctor once you have dressed to discuss the results and recommendations.

For the actual pelvic exam, you disrobe and put on an examination gown (the staff will instruct you); you can leave your socks on so your feet won't get cold. You lie back on a table with your feet in stirrups. Your butt needs to be right at the edge of the table. The doctor (or examining clinician) will insert a speculum which is designed to hold the vaginal walls open for visual inspection of the cervix. This does not hurt, but you do feel pressure. Most places have some sort of picture stuck to the ceiling for you to stare at to distract yourself. Then a small sample of cervical cell will be collected using a small tool that looks similar to a mascara brush or cotton swab. It's a strange sensation, but it does not hurt and is very quick. They will also press on your abdomen to check your internal organs, and may do a quick cancer screening that involves inserting a gloved finger or a strip or swab in your anus. They may also do a breast exam, similar to what you should be doing for your self-exams, where the breast tissue is palpated to feel for any irregularities.

Keep in mind that these are professionals who have encountered many different people and conditions. You have nothing to be self-conscious or embarrassed about, because the chances are that they have dealt with whatever problems you may have before. Try to relax as much as you can by breathing slowly and deeply. Good Luck!

You can either go to the same Gyn your mom goes to or pick one your mom can recommend.

How the exam goes is: Your medical history is taken, next your led to an exam room where you're asked to change into a gown and given a sheet to cover your lower half. The nurse asks you questions and takes your pulse and blood pressure. Next the doctor comes in. He/she may ask you some questions (be honest in your answers), then begins the exam. First you're asked to lie down on the table and your breasts are felt for unusual lumps, then he/she asks you to put your feet in the stirrups and move down on the table so that the pelvic exam can begin. It's important to relax here. First your briefly examined, then a speculum will be inserted, the doctor inserts a long cotton swab for the pap smear for one second. That is removed and the nurse prepares it for the lab. The speculum is taken out. The doctor inserts one or two fingers (one if you're a virgin) while he presses on your tummy to check your ovaries and uterus. Next, some doctors will take a strip and insert it into your rectum for one second (this is a cancer test).
Then you're done. You can ask the doctor questions here and he/she will tell you how you are doing and give you any prescriptions. You check out with the receptionist. Some places have you pay when you check in, some have you pay when you check out.

The hardest part of the exam (especially for virgins) is the speculum. As long as you relax as best you can, you will get used to it and it will eventually not be as uncomfortable. Luckily, it is not there long.
